Account groups are used to organize and manage the G/L accounts available in a chart of accounts. G/L accounts with similar functionality are usually assigned to the same account group.

Range of G/L accounts
You can set a range of G/L accounts when defining each account group. Only accounts that belong to that range can be assigned to the account group. Ranges assigned to different account groups can be overlapped.
Field Status group
In a field status group you find the list of fields available for a specific transaction. For each field you can set the status, in order to define whether the field will appear as required, optional, non editable, or hidden.
The field status group defined for an account group will apply to all the G/L accounts assigned to that group in the G/L account master data transaction (in the company code segment) .

1.2. Fields available in the G/L account master data #
To decide which fields will be available in the G/L account master data (company code segment) there are 2 different field status group to adjust:
- The account group field status group.
This is usually the way used to control the arrangement of fields in the G/L account master data.
- The transaction or activity field status group.
You can change the arrangement of fields also depending on the activity used (display / change / create).
To decide which is the status for a field, the system retrieves its status in both field status groups, and applies the status with highest priority: 1 Hide (highest) / 2 Display / 3 Required / 4 Optional.
So if you want the fields not to be affected by the activity used, you should set the status to “optional” in the activity field status group. In case that you want certain fields to be always hidden, no matter which account group they have, you should set their status to “hide” in the activity field status group,
